If you don't have a Google Analytics account yet, you simply must get one. Google is the big daddy of search engines, and if you want to rank with them, you need to learn how Google works. Google's own tools included in their analytics programs helps you get some serious insight into how that specific search engine works to direct traffic.
Like I said, Google is a free service that provides the most detailed website tracking of any system out there, paid or free. It requires that you copy a bit of HTML code onto each page you want to track. I copy it into my website template, which then automatically ads it onto every page of my website.
Once installed, Google Analytics starts tracking who visits your website, how they found your website, how long a visitor is on your website, what pages they saw on your website, what a visitor clicked on with your website, and much more! You can run reports on percentage of traffic generated from search engines versus direct or referred traffic. Google Analytics even tells you the keywords people used when searching and finding your website.
How do you use this information? Well, over time, if you've optimized your website for the search engines effectively, you should note an increase in traffic being generated by the search engines. Also, as you generate more traffic, ideally people will be staying on your site longer (a bounce is when someone visits your website and leaves within moments).
Go install Google's Analytics right now! Don't wait. The internet is littered with failed businesses that have put off important tasks for tomorrow that never comes. Explore this powerful analytical program. You'll find lots of help throughout their dashboard. And if you end up loving it like I have, Google's got lots of other tools you can use to market your website. Just go to google.com, login, and take a look around.
